Pope Leo XIV's Angelus, the first since his stay at the Gemelli
At noon the prayer from the window of the papal apartment, the day after his return to the Vatican

Today, Sunday 18 October 2026, at noon (Rome time) Pope Leo XIV will pray the Angelus from the window of the papal apartment (Press Office). It is his first Angelus since his discharge from the Gemelli Hospital, where he underwent lung surgery on 13 October: yesterday afternoon the Pope returned to the Vatican, as the Holy See Press Office confirmed (statement B0819).
The context. On leaving the Gemelli the Pope thanked Stefano Margaritora, who performed the operation, together with the medical and nursing team (the return to the Vatican). Margaritora told Vatican News that at discharge the Pope was "in entirely satisfactory clinical condition" (the interview with the surgeon).
Today's Gospel. Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Matthew 22:15-21: "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God" (the Gospel in the words of the Popes).

The Pope on the Gospel: a God not afraid of history
Commenting at the Angelus on the Gospel "Render unto Caesar", Pope Leo XIV said: "In Jesus, we contemplate a God who is not afraid of history but comes instead to dwell within it." "His Kingdom does not abolish human roles and responsibilities," he explained. "It does, however, call us to live without compromise, free from selfish ambitions and unjust motives, seeking above all the Kingdom of God and his righteousness."

I wish to express my particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all the staff of the Gemelli Hospital. This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity. Now that I have overcome this delicate phase, as you know, I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers. Thank you once again. Thank you all! Have a good Sunday!" On the Gospel "Render unto Caesar": "In Jesus, we contemplate a God who is not afraid of history but comes instead to dwell within it".
