Today, Sunday 18 October 2026, at noon (Rome time) Pope Leo XIV will pray the Angelus from the window of the papal apartment (Press Office). It is his first Angelus since his discharge from the Gemelli Hospital, where he underwent lung surgery on 13 October: yesterday afternoon the Pope returned to the Vatican, as the Holy See Press Office confirmed (statement B0819).

The context. On leaving the Gemelli the Pope thanked Stefano Margaritora, who performed the operation, together with the medical and nursing team (the return to the Vatican). Margaritora told Vatican News that at discharge the Pope was "in entirely satisfactory clinical condition" (the interview with the surgeon).

Today's Gospel. Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Matthew 22:15-21: "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God" (the Gospel in the words of the Popes).

The Pope's words at the Angelus

Pope Leo XIV said: "I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I have truly sensed your support. Thank you! I wish to express my particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all the staff of the Gemelli Hospital. This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity. Now that I have overcome this delicate phase, as you know, I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers. Thank you once again. Thank you all! Have a good Sunday!"
