Encyclical Letter on safeguarding the human person in the age of artificial intelligence
Leo XIV's first encyclical, signed on the 135th anniversary of Rerum novarum and published on 25 May 2026. It addresses artificial intelligence in the light of social teaching: human dignity, the technocratic paradigm, accountability, independent oversight and concentration of power.

Address
First greeting and first blessing to the faithful
Editorial summary. On the evening of his election, 16 October 1978, John Paul II addresses the faithful from the Loggia of St Peter's Basilica: he recalls John Paul I, says he was called "from a distant country", admits he was afraid to accept, entrusting himself to Christ and Our Lady, and asks the Romans to correct him if he makes mistakes in Italian. Unofficial translation by Vatican Report: Praised be Jesus Christ. Dearest brothers and sisters, we are all still saddened after the death of our most beloved Pope John Paul I. And now the Most Eminent Cardinals have called a new Bishop of Rome. They have called him from a distant country... distant, but always so close through communion in the Christian faith and tradition. I was afraid to receive this nomination, but I did it in the spirit of obedience to Our Lord Jesus Christ and in total trust in his Mother, the Most Holy Madonna. I do not know whether I can express myself well in your... our Italian language. If I make a mistake, you will correct me. And so I present myself to you all, to confess our common faith, our hope, our trust in the Mother of Christ and of the Church, and also to set out anew on this road of history and of the Church, with the help of God and with the help of men.
