UBA: Doctor Honoris Causa for Leo XIV

The Superior Council of the Universidad de Buenos Aires unanimously resolved on Wednesday 28 October 2026 to grant Pope Leo XIV (Robert Francis Prevost) the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, the university’s highest honorary distinction. Leo XIV will visit Argentina for the first time during his Apostolic Journey (Argentine leg 8–11 November).

According to the official UBA note, the resolution stresses that, beyond his role as head of State of Vatican City and supreme authority of the Catholic Church, Leo XIV has become a worldwide reference, intervening on inequality and poverty, migration, the environmental crisis, technological change and AI’s impact on work, armed conflict and peacebuilding, democratic coexistence and dialogue among cultural and religious traditions.

UBA links the award to the value of academic, cultural and interreligious dialogue. Ámbito and Infobae report that the title is expected to be conferred during the Argentina visit; UBA does not specify the ceremony’s date or venue.
