Pope Leo XIV: the final histology shows the tumour removed on 13 October was a lung adenocarcinoma and the disease was localized. No further treatment is necessary. His doctors, Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora, announced it this evening through the Holy See Press Office.
π©Ί The test results
The statement was issued this evening by the Pope's personal physician, Luigi Carbone, and by Stefano Margaritora, the surgeon who operated on him at the Gemelli Hospital eight days ago. According to Vatican News, the surgery removed the lower lobe of his right lung. "The final histopathology and molecular testing reports on the tissue removed during the Holy Father's surgery were issued today. The results confirmed that the tumor was a lung adenocarcinoma and that the disease was localized. A subsequent oncological assessment has confirmed that no further treatment is necessary."
βͺ A day of return
The news comes at the end of the day on which Pope Leo XIV returned to St Peter's Square for the General Audience, his first since the surgery, touring the square in the popemobile among thousands of pilgrims and giving a catechesis on family and life. In the morning he also received the participants in the conference "Holiness in History" organized by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
π The Bulletin
Today's Holy See Press Office Bulletin still lists three items: the audience for the conference on the Saints, the General Audience, and the appointment of Leandro Machado Silvestre as bishop of GuajarΓ‘-Mirim, Brazil. The histology result was released as a statement to journalists, not as a numbered Bulletin item.
