The Holy See Press Office announced today, Friday, Oct. 30, that Pope Leo XIV has voted in the U.S. midterm elections, which take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Mail-in ballot in Chicago. According to the Press Office, the Pope, an American citizen, "has exercised his right to vote as a United States citizen, whenever he was eligible to do so." It added that, "in keeping with this long-standing practice of civic participation, he has submitted his mail-in ballot in Chicago."

A right and a duty. In voting, Vatican News reported, the Pope expressed his "belief in the right and the duty of citizens to participate in democratic processes."

Peru too. "The Holy Father has also confirmed that, during his years of residence in Peru he exercised his right to vote whenever he was eligible to do so," the statement noted.

Background. On Oct. 29 the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Robert Francis Prevost was on the list of people who had requested a vote-by-mail ballot in Will County, Illinois. The Holy See has now confirmed that the Pope has voted.
