Medjugorje: Leo XIV names Cavina apostolic visitor, succeeding Cavalli
Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Aldo Cavalli, an apostolic nuncio, as Apostolic Visitor with a special character for the parish of Medjugorje. In his place he has appointed Francesco Cavina, 71, bishop emeritus of Carpi, "for an indefinite period and ad nutum Sanctae Sedis". The Holy See Press Office announced the change today, 31 October.
Cavalli, who turned 80 on 18 October, had been appointed by Pope Francis in November 2021, after the death of Henryk Hoser. The visitor's role is exclusively pastoral. Under the 2024 note of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, "The Queen of Peace", he is the one who authorises any publication of messages.
